Combined Hall Wanted
Reported plans by the Education Department to build an assembly hall at the Northcote school were opposed by Cr. W. T. Rice at a meeting last evening of the Waimairi County Council. He said that the matter had been drawn to his attention by the Papanui-Styx branch of the Labour Party. It would be much better to have the assembly school and proposed community centre in one building, similar to that planned at Fendalton. Cr. Rice said he would have placed on the finance committee agenda for consideration a recommendation that the council consider making a “substantial grant for a combined assembly hall and community centre.”
