Failed To Qualify

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) INDIANAPOLIS (Indiana), May 23. The champion driver, Rodger Ward, failed to qualify today for the Indianapolis 500-mile car race on May 29 for the first time in 15 years. He won the race in 1959 and 1962.

Ward wrecked his car trying to qualify on Saturday after having three engines fail.

He came back today after an overnight rebuilding job completed just 15 minutes before the end of the qualifying period. He got his Watson-Ford up to 154 miles an hour on the first of the four qualifying laps but lost speed steadily and wound up with a 153.623 average—too slow to make the field.
