Annual Fire Brigades’ Conference At Temuka
(From Our Own Reporter) TEMUKA. May 25.
Delegates from 26 fire brigades in the Canterbury area attended the annual conference of the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association held in Temuka when they were welcomed by the Chief Fire Officer of the Temuka brigade, Mr R. W. McMillan, and the Mayor, Mr M. A. Cameron. The visit of the delegates to Temuka was a “red letter day” for the Temuka Fire Brigade, said Mr Cameron, who also expressed pleasure at the fact that the conference was held in the new fire station. The secretary of the Temuka Fire Brigade, Mr C. R. Beck was elected president of the association for the next year. Other officers elected were:—

.man M. Foster (Lyttelton), junior vice- president. Station Officer Williams (Darfield); secretary. Fireman driver N. Price (Kaiapoi); Brigade representatives, Station Officer L. McGillen (Temuka). Deputy Fire Officer Watts (Geraldine): Third officer O’Malley (Waimate), Station officer Leadon (Burnham), Fireman Tasker (Leeston), and Fireman Earl (Culverden). During the evening a past presidents’ dinner was held at which 25 former presidents of the Association were in attendance with Mr J. C. Allfrey of Temuka, who was president in 1931, as chairman.
Service honours for members of the Temuka Brigade were presented at a social function held in the Citizens’ Hall later. They were presented by Chief Fire Officer C. F. Nightingale of Oamaru as follows: Five year medal. Fireman I. G. Clarkson; two year gold bar to make 27 years’ service, Chief Fire Officer McMillan; two year silver bars, Fireman M. C. Hanifin to make 17 years’ service: Deputy-Chief Fire Officer D. Coskerie (13 years): sub-officer P. Tomuri (9 years) and Fireman C. R. Beck (21 years).
