WORLD-WIDE DECLINE
Bread, Butter Sales (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 6. A world-wide diet craze was resulting in an alarming decline in butter consumption, the advertising manager of the Australian Dairy Board (Mr G. W. Waye) said today. The consumption of bread was falling off as much as 31b a head a year and butter was the victim of the diet craze, he said. Since the last war, the consumption of butter had fallen off on a world-wide scale. In 1939, the per capita consumption of butter in Australia was almost 331 b but by the end of 1963 the rate had fallen to less than 231 b a head.
To combat this, the board has introduced a 1200-calorie diet, using, in the main, dairy foods.
