INDUCTION SERVICE
Catholic At COf E.
INVERCARGILL, May 6. A Roman Catholic priest last night attended an Anglican induction service for the first time in Southland. He is the Rev. Father T. G. Keyes, who was present at the induction of Canon W. L. S. Harbour to St John’s Anglican Church. Canon Harbour was inducted by the Bishop of Dunedin (the Rt. Rev. A. H. Johnston). Canon Harbour said today the Administrator of St. Mary’s Catholic parish, Father ( J. A. McCarthy, had been invited to the service, but because of an appointment he was unable to attend. Father Keyes had attended as his representative. It was the first time a Catholic priest had attended such a service in Southland before, although priests had often attended social functions held afterwards.
Father Keyes spoke at the welcome ceremony after the service, saying how pleased he was to attend and describing his visit as part of the new outlook of his church.
The congregation was warmly appreciative of his remarks.
