FRENCH SINGING BY PUPILS

A number of French songs were sung by junior pupils of Mairehau High School, appropriately costumed, at the monthly meeting of the Alliance Francaise.

The guest speaker at the meeting was Mr L. Jaeomells. a Swiss businessman, who spoke of the modern developments and pace of life in Switzerland.

With an area approximately the size of. Canterbury, Switzerland had a population of 4.5 m, which swelled to 8m in the tourist season, he said.

Many wide autoroutes were being built. These had three lanes—slow, medium, and fast. The fast was for cars travelling at more than 100 miles an hour.

With high rents, population pressure, rising living standards and large tax concession incentives, there was a fantastic building boom, he said. Space being limited, buildings went upward:

blocks of flats were even built over railway lines and autoroutes. Hostesses for the meeting were Mesdames J. Maslen, J. Buchan and K. Renwick. Mr D. S. Walker arranged the programme.
