ATTACKING INNINGS BY TRIO—MATCH DRAWN

(N Z P.A -Reuter —Copyright) ARUNDEL (Sussex), May 3. Despite attacking innings by E. R. Dexter, M. C. Cowdrey, and P. B. H. May, three of the finest English post-war batsmen, the Duke of Norfolk’s team failed in its bid to beat New Zealand on the Arundel Castle ground.

The Duke’s side had been set the difficult task of scoring 218 to win the one-day match in only 140 minutes. This annual game against the touring side is more a social occasion than a serious match, and so Dexter gained appreciative applause from the crowd of 3000 basking in warm sunshine when he produced a typically dashing display of batsmanship, hitting 52 in an hour. Cowdrey and May, although not so aggressive, kept the score moving briskly, and the 150 took only an hour and three-quarters.

Then J. R. Reid, the New Zealand captain, brought back his fastest bowlers, and the game ended in an honourable draw with the Duke’s team 198 for six. The New Zealanders, after winning the toss, scored only 67 for two in the 90 minutes before lunch, B. E. Congdon hitting 47 of these. Afterwards the experienced B. Sutcliffe, and later in the innings B. R. Taylor and R. C. Motz, increased the tempo as Cowdrey gave his regular bowlers a rest, and brought on himself, T. W. Graveney, and May. Reid eventually declared at 217 for eight, made in three hours. The New Zealanders left for Worcester this morning to prepare for the first major match of the tour on Wednesday. Last evening they were entertained by the Duke of Norfolk at Arundel Castle.
