Mechanised Discharging (Special Crspdt. N.Z PA.) LONDON, May 3. The Blue Star Line, in conjunction with the Mersey Docks and harbour boards, will build a fully-mechanised discharging berth for carcase meat and other refrigerated foodstuffs at Liverpool. Blue Star will lease it, providing its own equipment. An existing transit shed is to be demolished and replaced by a new aluminium structure, 775 ft long and 85ft wide, built at a cost of about £150,000. Among the mechanical handling aids which Blue Star plans to install are two portable elevators, each with a capacity of 3000 packages (or 100 tons) an hour, fed by telescopic belt conveyors and chutes.

Overhead conveyors will run the length of the shed and connect with the existing cold store across the dock road. Packages for direct delivery to road and rail transport will be transferred to ground-level belts.
