BUILDING SHIPS
Clyde Firm Seeks Aid (Special Crspdt. N.ZPA.) LONDON, May 3. The Clyde shipbuilding firm, John Brown, is asking for Government help to double the capacity of its yard so that it can build vessels of up to 260,000 tons deadweight. The company says the scheme could be Britain's answer to Japanese domination of the industry The river would also be diverted and deep-ended to open it to much bigger ships that the present limit of 30.000 tons, and a terminal would be built for iron ore. No costs are so far put on it, but unofficial estimates are that the scheme could hardly cost less than £2O million.
