T he race was the first ■eg in the American triple crown for three-year-olds. The others are the Preakness Stakes on May 15 and the Belmont Stakes on June 5. The race was delayed 30 min utes after a fire broke out in part of the grandstand. Fire engines raced down the track and about 3500 spectators left the stand as firemen quickly brought the flames under control.
