First Round In Tavendale Cup

Christchurch, Addington, Hornby and Sydenham won their first round Tavendale Cup Rugby League matches on Saturday. The two matches at the Show Grounds were quite entertaining as the lead changed several times.

Hornby scored five tries to Papanui’s one, but the Papanui kicker, C. Schwass, landed five goals to keep the scoring close while Linwood scored four of the seven tries in the match against Christchurch only to lose by three points. In the other matches, Addington and Sydenham gained comfortable wins over Marist and Kaiapoi respectively in scrappy games. Results:— Christchurch 17, Linwood 14. Hornby 19, Papanui 13. Sydenham 18, Kaiapoi 4. Addington 19, Marist 2. Christchurch Wins In Forwards CHRISTCHURCH 17: J. Williams <2), D. Robinson tries; W. Morrison 4 goals. LINWOOD 14: R. Tawhai. V. Burt. B. Williams, J. Fonatea tries; Burt goal. The superiority of the Christchurch pack was responsible for its win in a match that was both entertaining and marred by injury. Each team exhausted its supply of two replacements, and Linwood finished the match with only 12 players. in the first spell Linwood, through its backs, looked the most dangerous, but after halftime the Christchurch forwards quietly and efficiently took over. R. H. Turton, returning to the team as a replacement, did much to raise the confidence of his players. The hard-running T. Parker and the sound J. Gallagher played well for Christchurch. Parker burst through on several occasions to set tries up, while Gallagher was the most impressive on defence In the Christchurch backs, L. Tehuia provided strong opposition for W. J. Godfrey, and their tussle was a feature of the game, with the honours going to Tehuia by a slight margin. D. Cocroft and the determined wing, Williams, were dangerous in possession. The Linwood forwards were slower than their counterparts, but G. Ravlin escaped the defence once or twice. Fonatea used his weight where it was needed —close to the line—to score his try. As usual Burt ran well on the Linwood wing, and E. Kereopa returned another solid performance. Referee: Mr K. Henry. Five Tries To One HORNBY If: T. Williams (3) and G. Woodgate (2) tries; T. Williams two goals. PAPANUI 13: S. Dunn a try; C. Schwass five goals. There was far more decisiveness in Hornby’s work to enable it enjoy a comfortable win over Papanui. Although the margin was only six points the difference in tries was five to one. Both sides were affected by the requirements for the Canterbury team, but Hornby’s substitutes were of greater value than their opponents. With hardly any defections in the forwards the winner was able to control matters up front, and was given an ascendancy that Papanui was never able to overcome. In the backs Hornby appeared to have a decided edge over Papanui, with one of the replacements. T. Williams, having a field day with three tries and two goals. Playing at stand-off half instead of his usual position behind the scrum, R. F. Neiman was able to get his backs moving quite often. In the forwards D. A. Condick made many telling runs and received plenty of support from D. W. Moore. R. J. McKenzie, and C. Humphries. As loose forward. G. Woodgate had a good day. too. Papanui was never able to : ettle down to its own type of play, and in consequence the talents of Clarke and A. N. Amer were not seen to their best advantage. Referee: Mr P. Yaxley. Domination By Sydenham SYDENHAM 18: R. Raistrick, R. Mcßeath. B. D. Barron, J. Martin tries; A. Tun la 3 goals. KAIAPOI 4: M. Pullin and J. E. Bond goals. Some very poor Rugby League was served up for the few patrons at Addington Park and. although Sydenham dominated Kaiapoi in gaining possession, its big forwards w-ere too slow to take much advantage of this. Apart from an early period of dominance by Kaiapoi, Sydenham spent the greater part of the game on attack against a bumbling defence. Martin and K. J. Harding both played well, but starved Barron and T. Maurere. who seemed capable on the wing. Only in the dying stages of the came did Sydenham achieve superiority, and it scored two good tries. Barron scored in the corner after a good run by Martin and then Martin went over following a gritty run through numerous tackles by Maurere. . „ For Kaiapoi. only Bond, with his usual storming game, and Pullin, at full-back, played well Pullin tackled faultlessly and ran strongly. Kaiapoi's moves

were almost completely limited to the efforts of these two players.

Of 13 kicks at goal five were successful.

Addington ins Scrappy Match ADDINGTON 19: D. Hooper, A. McNaughton, K. R. Blackler tries; G. Teaho (4), M. J. Worters goals. HARIST 2: B. R. M. Schwass goal. Addington’s constructive forward play, coupled with crisp passing in the back-line, paved the way for its win over Marist. Marist was frequently formidable in the pack, but failed to move the ball with any speed along the back-line. Consequently, the Marist three-quarters were hemmed in by the alert cover-defence. M. J. Worters played with brilliance in the loose, and linked up well with his three-quarters to cause chaos in the Marist backs. The Marist loose forward, C. C. Worters, made several productive breaks, only to give away valuable ground with foolish infringements. B. R. Taylor and M. J. Donaldson played well in the tight, while J. B. Kennedy was the most dangerous Marist back. Referee: Mr R. A. Pont. Fourth Round The leading teams, Hornby and Linwood, will have comparatively easy matches in the fourth round of the Rugby League championship next Saturday. Hornby will meet Kaiapoi and Linwood will play Sydenham. The draw is: Hornby v. Kaiapoi, Marist v. Christchurch, Linwood v. Sydenham, Addington v. Papanui.
