Subversion Among Students Alleged

(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter—Copyright)

WASHINGTON, May 1.

President Johnson is studying evidence that subversive American groups are backing Communist propaganda trying to tear down the United States image throughout the world.

He is disturbed by reports given to him by the F.B.L about recent massive student demonstrations in U.S. cities. He has reached the conclusion that subversive elements have taken complete or partial leadership of student and other protest movements and are using them to depict the United States as a powerhungry nation trying to dominate South-east Asia and Latin America. The President is reliably reported to feel that a pattern exists between antiAmerican statements issued in Moscow. Peking and Hanoi one day and their repetition

the next day by American agitators. The F. 8.1. director, Mr J. Edgar Hoover, recently asked the President to convene a special conference to discuss the situation.

Although the President welcomes criticism of his policies on Vietnam, he is displaying signs of irritation and frustration over continuing demands by reputable groups for a U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam and suspension of American air raids on North Vietnam. Officials quote him -as saying he is hoarse from repeating his explanations of why the United States must stand up to the Communists in South-east Asia and about the disastrous results of any American withdrawal.
