TEACHING AID

Television Discussed The headmaster of Shirley Boys’ High School (Mr C. V. Gallagher) told members of the board o governors that he considered television had “a fairy good” educational value. Mr Gallagher said there were considerable advantages in the medium from an educational point of view; it was worth investigation. The subject of television as an educational aid was recently studied by the board of the Hillmorton High School who have asked other boards to consider the matter. Mr Gallagher said he was against closed circuit television.

To be really effective there had to be preparation leading up to the televised programme, and a follow-up, he said.

He feared that televised education might become stereotyped and do away with the individuality of teaching, said Mr W. V. Cowles. He agreed, however, that it was an excellent medium for imparting general knowledge. The board passed a motion expressing its interest in the subject and declared it would welcome any further information.

The following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr J. R. H. Hefford: deputy-chairman, Mr D. W. Rutherford; staffing committee, Mrs L. R. Hartley and Mr Rutherford; emergency committee, Mr Hefford and a co-opted member of the board.
