A Maori Reader
Te Rangatahi 2. Ka hao tc rangatahi (The new net goes out fishing). A Maori language book. By Hoanl R. Waititi. Illustrated by Dennis Turner. Department of Education. Government Printer. 216 pp. This Maori reader, the second in a series, is intended for use at the Form 4 level in secondary schools. Students who have mastered the first reader "Te Rangatahi 1,” with its wealth of explanatory illustrations, will welcome the present work which is similarly planned. It is a mirror of Maori activities pertaining to school, shearing shed, fishing, etc., and has a practical bias. One lesson features the great hui for King Koroki’s coronation. The exercises are carefully graded and have been tested on fourth formers at Queen Victoria School, Parnell. Each chapter consists of a short narrative in Maori followed by an explanation of new grammatical constructions introduced, a vocabulary of newly-introduced words, and exercises. Directions are given in Maori. By the time the student has reached the end of this volume, he will have acquired a good Maori vocabulary, as well as a knowledge of Maori action songs and hakas which are incorporated in the text. A grammar would be a necessary aid to finding one’s way about in the book. A Maori-English vocabulary is appended.
