HOSPITAL STAFF Chairman Dispute? Minister’s Claim
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, April 30. The claim by the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) that doctors could not be directed to any particular hospital was inaccurate, the chairman of the Southland Hospital Board (Mr J. A. Cushen) said today.
Mr McKay, replying last night to the board’s decision to refuse responsibility for any tragedy at the Gore Hospital due to its acute staff shortage, said he had no power to direct doctors to specific hospitals.
“This is true in the case of most house surgeons, but does not apply to bursars,” said Mr Cushen. “Holders of bursaries, of whom there are a certain number in every graduating class, can be directed as the Minister wishes. “On June 12, 1963. a bursar was directed from Wellington to Kew Hospital to relieve a shortage of house surgeons. That is what must be done to relieve the impossible situation at the Gore Hospital."
