Burnt Child On Neck With Lighted Cigarette
(New Zealand Press Association)
GISBORNE, April 30. An 18-year-old freezing worker, West Gerrard, who admited slapping and later burning a two-year-old girl with a lighted cigarette was convicted and sent to a detention centre-by Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M. today. Sergeant N. T. Dobson said that when the child’s mother, the de facto wife of the de-
cused, was out. Gerrard tried to feed the child who did not want to eat.
He slapped the child twice on the side of the head, and her mouth struck a table. He then put the child to bed but because she looked at him he burned her about the face with a lighted cigarette. The child had 22 burn blisters on her head and neck.
