HOME, KILNS LOST
Tobacco Farm Fire (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, April 30. Tapawera residents stood by helplessly today as a tobaccogrower was burned out of his home and his livelihood. No water was available and there is no fire brigade in the settlement. The fire destroyed the living quarters, two tobacco kilns, a bulk store and a tractor. The grower, Ralph Howes, who lives alone less than half a mile from Tapawera township, gave the alarm at 3.35 a_m. but his neighbours could do little to fight the fire, which was.fanned by a strong wind.
The Motueka river is about quarter of a mile away from the property, but no hose or pump was available.
