ELEVEN DEBUTANTES

Clusters of coloured balloons and arrangements of many-toned flowers and autumn leaves decorated the Winter Garden last evening for the annual ball of the Christchurch Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association, at which 11 debutantes made their curtsies.

The debutantes, who were presented to the president of the association (Mrs W. A. Staff), by the headmistress of the school (Miss P. M. Robinson), were:— Misses Elizabeth Adair, Ruth Brownie, Denise Davenport, Fern McColl, Cristine Pearce, Diane Revell, Gay Standish, Susanne Stott, Genevieve Thompson, Suzanne Ward, and Carol White.

After she had made her curtsey, each girl was presented with a posy of flowers. Miss E. Cornyns Thomas had trained the debutantes for the occasion.

Specially invited guests included Miss P. M. Robinson, Miss E. Cornyns Thomas; Miss M. B. Kissel; Mr and Mrs C. H. Perkins; the president of the Parent-Teacher Association (Mr I. Miller) and Mrs Miller; Miss B. Waller, representing the staff of the school; representatives of St. Margaret’s College (Mr and Mrs P. Maples), Rangiruru (Mr and Mrs D. E. DalIzell), Avonside Girls’ High

School (Mr and Mrs M. E. Murray), West Christchurch High School (Mr and Mrs R. G. Thomson), and Boys’ High School (Mr and Mrs R. W. Hobbs).

Mrs Staff wore a gown of midnight-blue tinselled brocade with an embossed design of roses. It was designed with

a fitted bodice and scooped neckline, a bell skirt.

Mrs Robinson wore a fulllength gown of striped taffeta shading from pollen yellow to dark olive. It featured a halter neckline outlined in black velvet, and was worn with a taffeta and velvet stole.
