UNIYIKSITY VACANCIES MONASH UNIVERSITY, Melbourne, Australia. READER or ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN FRENCH and READER or ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN GERMAN APPLICATIONS are invited for appointment to the above positions in the DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES which at present has French. THE FRENCH SECTION has a full-time academic staff of twenty-one and 450 students. Current research projects include aspects of 16th, ISth and 20th centurs' French literature, bibliography and textual criticism, and the application of electronic computers to linguistic and stylistic problems. The Section is also the editorial centre for the AUSTRALIAN JOURNAL OF FRENCH STUDIES. LECTURER, SENIOR TEACHING FELLOW and TEACHING FELLOW in the following departments of the faculty of engineering. Applied Mechanics: This department is concerned with solid mechanics, mechanisms, design, mechanical systems and their control, production science. Candidates’ interests should He within these fields. The department serves the faculty as a whole and also balances the intentional “fluid mechanics” bias of the department of mechanical engineering. Chemical Engineering: Applications will be welcomed from physical chemists and chemical engineers with interests in any branch of chemical engineering or chemical technology. The following branches are of special interest: Process control, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, kinetics of industrial reactions, high pressure and high temperature technology. The department is well housed in a new building.

Civil Engineering: It is planned to make four new appointments in the fields of: Soil mechanics, surveying, concrete technology and civil engineering design. These areas of study are integrated into the expanding teaching and research activities of the department. Laboratory space of 26,000 sq. ft. will be completed by the end of 1965, and further extensions are planned for 1967. Electrical Engineering: This department has a total of nine academic staff and 13 research students together with supporting staff and is particularly active in research in the broad field of communications and control engineering. It is particularly desired at this stage to expand the present activity in heavy current electrical engineering, and applications would be welcomed from persons with considerable experience in this field. Mechanical Engineering: This department is responsible for studies in the general fields of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. Applications are invited from candidates with a major interest in hydraulics. Salary ranges: Senior lecturer, £A3250-£A3SOO p.a.; lecturer, £A2400-£A3150 p.a.; senior teaching fellow, £AI9OO-£A2150 p.a.; teaching fellow, £AI6OO- - p.a.; with superannuation provision on the F.S.S.U. basis for appointees of senior teaching fellow status and above.
