Cost Of Weeds To Railways

HAMILTON, April 30. The Railways Department spent more than £250,000 a year controlling weeds growing on or near railway lines, the department’s engineer at Hamilton (Mr C. Button) said today. He told 70 officers of the Association of Inspectors of Noxious Weeds at their annual conference that to control weeds on the 35,000 acres of railway reserve the department uses eight 1200-gallon rail-mounted units and 40 portable ones. Chemicals and weed-killers cost the department £llO,OOO a year.
