AGREEMENT REACHED
Shipwrights’ Overtime The vexed question of overtime orders for members of the Lyttelton branch of the New Zealand Shipwrights’ Union had now been resolved, said the union’s national secretary (Mr T. M. Hill) of Wellington, in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Hill was accompanied on his visits to the Lyttelton and Timaru branches by the assistant general secretary of the New Zealand Port Employers’ Association (Mr F. Conlon). “We resolved the question of minimum amount of overtime to be worked in the industry in Lyttelton,” said Mr Hill. “The union will co-operate to meet any emergency position that arises.” The general desire at Lyttelton, said Mr Hill, was for all work to be done within a 10-hour day. The new agreement for shipwrights at Lyttelton, he said, included a new amenities block to be provided by the New Zealand Stevedoring Company. A new agreement at Timaru provided for a further two men being put on the guaranteed wage and improved amenities. Mr Hill also visited branches of the shipwrights’ union at Bluff, Dunedin and Port Chalmers. Generally speaking, said Mr Hill, he was satisfied with what money had been obtained for the men, particularly in having the ruling rate brought •”» ’ward basis.
