Art Cinema

Sir, —Once when a suburban cinema proprietor tried to obtain permission to exhibit European films in Christchurch he gave a long list of persons pledged to support such a venture. A witness against this venture poured scorn on this list of names and declared it invalid. How correct he was! For when this same person tries the same venture in a suburban cinema the support is pitiable. Where are all these outraged citizens who rushed to write their names pledging support? It has to be faced, the witness was concerned only with economics, but in more ways than one was right The Christchurch intellectual and educated groups are not a very worldly lot—Yours, etc. J. R. QUINCE. April 30, 1965.
