FEWER BIRTHS AND DEATHS
First Quarter’s Statistics
Fewer have been born in Christchurch since the beginning of the year, than in the first three months of 1964, and there have been fewer deaths. Statistics show births were 1349 for the quarter, against 1423 last year. There were 17 fewer deaths; 542 have died since January 1, against 559 in the same period last year.
More marriages took place, but fewer couples were wed in a registry office. There were 775 marriages registered in Christchurch during the last three months, 41 more than in the previous year. Figures for registry office marriages fell from 118 to 104.
There were 451 births last month compared with 460 in March last year. The number of deaths was 220, compared with 196 in the previous March. There were 222 marriage notices issued during the month, and 33 registry marriages.
