Takanini Apprentice Coming South

“The Press" Special Sereice AUCKLAND.

An 18-year-old Takanini apprentice, A. C. Clark, has been given the opportunity to further his experience of hurdles and steeplechase riding on the horses of Mr W. E. Hazlett’s powerful team at Riverton.

Clark, who has been in the employ of B. L. Hillis, has

grabbed the chance. He will start his trip south on Wednesday to begin a month’s trial at Riverton. Mr Hazlett’s stable is managed by W. J. Hillis, an uncle of Clark’s former employer.

Hillis rode John O’Groats to win the Grand National Steeplechase last August. For many years he has been a leading hurdles and steeplechase rider in the South Island.

Clark became an apprentice toward the end of 1960, but was unlucky to be laid up for 12 months as the result of injuries he suffered in a race fall at Dargaville in November, 1962.

He will leave the north on a good note, having won two races at the Waiuku nontotalisator meeting last Saturday.
