MALAWI REBELS
130 Held Captive
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BLANTYRE, March 1. Dr. Hastings Banda, the Malawi Prime Minister, today announced the capture of 130 persons who took part in a recent attack on the Malawi town of Fort Johnston. The raiders were supporters of the former Education Minister, Mr Henry Chipembere, and “to all intents and purposes the rebellion has been crushed,” Dr. Banda said in a broadcast.
Mr Chipembere was in hiding, he said. The Government alleges that Mr Chipembere masterminded the attack on Fort Johnson, 120 miles north of Blantyre. The wife and child of an African police inspector were killed. Mr Chipembere intended to assassinate him and his Ministers, Dr. Banda claims.
