PRISONER CAUGHT

Escape From Paparua

A prisoner who escaped from Paparua Prison on Saturday afternoon was recaptured by a police party in a plantation at the western end of Harewood road near the Waimakariri river stopbank about 10.30 a.m. yesterday. He is Owen Francis McCauley, aged 24, who is serving a term of three years for car conversion. McCauley was missed at 6 p.m., and about 30 prison officers and policemen and three police dogs made a widespread search for him throughout the night. Road blocks were set up at the Waimakariri, Rakaia, Rakaia gorge, k and Kowhai river bridges. On Saturday afternoon McCauley, who was a trusted prisoner, was mustering sheep on the prison farm near the Main West road, about half a mile from the prison buildings. It is believed that he cycled to the plantation to the north of Christchurch Airport and spent the night, there.

A large police party, accompanied by dogs, went to the plantation after information was received that he might be in the area. McCauley gave himself up without resisting.
