Man Killed On Crossing
An elderly man was killed instantly yesterday when his car was struck by a railway locomotive on a level crossing about two miles north of the Orari township at 2.50 p.m., the Press Association reports.
A second road death yesterday was that of a woman, whose car collided with an Army truck on Bombay Hill, in the Auckland district.
The man killed near Orari was: Frederick Charles Taverner, aged 76, a retired farmer, of Belfield, Geraldine. Mr Taverner was crossing the railway about 100 yards from the Main South road. He was travelling towards Belfield, and the locomotive was travelling south on the main trunk line. Mr Taverner was alone. Dr. D. M. Todd, of Geraldine, was called to the scene. Mr Taverner’s 1964-model car was torn in half by the impact, and the wreckage was dragged several yards down the line. The locomotive was slightly damaged. Collided With Truck
The woman killed when her car collided head-on with an
Army truck on the Bombay Hill yesterday morning was: Mrs Edith Mary Sherwood Badham, aged 45, wife of Mr J. M. Badham, of 313 Thames street, Morrinsville. Mrs Badham, the mother of three children, was travelling to Auckland for the university enrolment of her eldest son. The driver of the truck, Trooper M. J. Hollman, was unhurt.
