University Seeks Close Liaison With District
Some machinery or committee where opinions or thoughts by Ham residents on the new University of Canterbury at Ham could be taken Into account, was suggested by the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) to about 250 residents at flam on Saturday. "Your opinions and good will are important to us,” said Dr. Pownall. “We are not juggernauts or large tanks to ride over you. We take a
personal interest in you, and many of us are buying into this area.” About 500 households in Ham were invited by circular to an informal tour of the £lom complex now taking shape as the new university. Plans and progress were outlined by Dr. Pownall at three vantage points and then the gathering inspected new buildings. Solutions to possible problems for residents,
such as noise, smoke and car parking, were explained. Only one couple had a question to ask at the end of the tour. “Place Of Beauty” "This will be a place of great beauty," said Dr. Pownall. “We have on order to 1970 10,000 trees and shrubs, and will have 20 men to look after them.”
A private road would follow the North Avon through
the grounds, and, when landscaping was completed, would be one of the pleasantest drives in the country.
Plans allowed for 1284 cars to be parked in the university grounds, said Dr. Pownall.
A working formula had to be found to solve this problem and all would be done to keep parking on the site, even if it had to be enforced.
