Rise In Prices At Ewe Fair

All classes of ewes sold buoyantly at the Amberley (northern section) ewe fair yesterday. Most vendors received much better prices than at the sale a year ago, advances being as much as 40s a head. Prices showed a much bigger gain over those at last year’s fair than did prices at the southern section of the fair held last week.

Many sheep which normally are sold at this fair had already been sold because of feed and water shortages.

The offering totalled 7856, compared with 14,940 a year ago. It included 3897 twotooths (6594 last year) and 3959 older ewes (8346). The sheep come from districts including Cheviot and Kaikoura, and considering that the former district was one of the areas worst hit by the drought last year the offering was in surprisingly good order. It has to be remembered, however, that many sheep from the worstaffected parts of the district had already been sold. The younger ewes in the fair yesterday appeared to have come through the difficult conditions particularly well, and there were some very good lines among them. Two-tooth Sale The sale was strong throughout. It began with twotooths making several shillings ahead of last year’s fair and in odd cases more than 20s more. Regularly prices were between 10s and 20s better, and over a selection 23 pens sold yesterday and 19 pens of the same vendors’ sheep sold last year the advantage lay with yesterday’s sale by Ils to 12s a head. At last week’s southern section sale two-tooth values were about 3s better than in 1964.

The best of the young ewes brought from 97 s to £5 6s, with good at 90s to 975, average to good 80s to 90s and others at 73s to 795. There was not the run of two-tooths bringing £5 or better that there was last week, but for the class of sheep it was an extremely sound sale. Two-tooths topped £5 twice. Last year the top price was 94s 6d. The P. and K. M. Le Cren Children’s Trust (One Tree Hill) topped the market with 74 Corriedales at £5 6s. This compared with their best price last year of 91s. E. J. D. Good (Matiawa) also sold 70 halfbreds at £5 3s and 112 at 98s. Mr Good’s best figure a year ago was 94s 6d. Sales at 99s were made by W. N. Maxwell (Mount Sandford) for 66 Corriedales and H. M. Good (Wairewa) for 70 halfbreds. Mount Sandford sheep

sold up to 88s last year, while the Wairewa entry realised to 725. R. D. Parsons (NgaMotu) sold 74 Corriedales at 98s (his top price last year was 88s) and J. Fitzsimmons (Riverview) was paid 97s for 80, compared with up to 84s a year ago. Once again four-year-olds sold exceptionally well and made the younger ewes look relatively cheap. It was here that the biggest margins over last year were recorded—in one case 40s. The best of the four-year-old ewes realised from 80s to 91s, with good at 70s to 795, average at 60s to 68s, and others at 53s to 595. For 13 pens sold yesterday the advance on last year’s fair for similar sheep was 13s, again much in excess of the 5s 6d rise recorded at the southern section sale. Leading Sales The estate J. L. Rollason (Kekerengu) topped the section with 133 halfbreds out of a line of 253 making 91s. The balance of the line sold for 84s. Last year sheep from the same property realised up to 51s. Two sales were made at 90s. This price was paid for 325 Corriedales from W. N. Maxwell, who was paid up to 59s at last year’s fair, and to E. C. Trewin (Glenstrae) for 320 Corriedales—his sheep made to 64s 6d last year. C. M. Souter (Argyll), who made to 56s last year, had 69 Corriedales yesterday at 86s, and the estate J. J. Fitzpatrick (Glentanner) sold 73 Corriedales at 82s.

Among a small selection ofi five-year-olds the best made from 62s to 695, with average to good at 50s to 57s and others at 46s to 495. Again prices were well in advance of last year with four pens sold yesterday and four pens of the same vendors’ sheep sold last year showing an average gain of 12s yesterday. Top price of 69s was obtained by R. D. Parsons (Nga-Motu) for 207 Corriedales. His top price last year was 51s. C. M. Souter realised 62s 6d for 66 Corriedales compared with his best price last year of 475. I. S. Douglas (Te Ngapari) also had a pen of 151 Corriedales which brought 60s. The only four and five-year-olds were from A. D. Appleby (Imphal) and he had 73 Corriedales at 625. Last year sheep of the same age group from this vendor sold to 455.

Quite a number of purchases were made for the area around Amberley, but sheep also went to Cheviot and Hawarden, Rangiora, Loburn, Oxford, Leeston. Southbridge, Dunsandel, Darfield, Methven, Rakaia and Ashburton. The following is a range of values, with figures for last year’s fair shown for comparison:—
