ONE STROKE TO SPARE
Tourney To Canterbury
Canterbury had only one stroke to spare in winning the inaugural South Island under--21 interprovincial golf tournament in an exciting finish in the rain on the last sreen at Balmacewen, Dunedin, on Sunday. The Canterbury player. D. R, Hope, was a clear leader in the individual section, being the only player in the tournament to break 300 and finishing six strokes ahead of his closest rivals.
The Canterbury team of Hope. P. J. Amos, R. H. A. Bradley and J. A. On- led from first to last, but a strong challenge by Otago in the last 18 holes reduced Canterbury's lead from six strokes to one. Mid-South Canterbury began well but fell away and Southland was never a serious contender for the title. Hope played with certainty and consistency for rounds of 74. 71. 77 and 73; an aggregate of 295. This total also gave him third place in the Otago senior stroke championship, held concurrently with the under-21 tournament. Other good individual scores were returned by I. S. Beswarick (Mid-South Canterbury) and W. Romeril (Otago), both of whom had aggregates of 301. Their performances meant that players under 21 occupied three of the first seven places in the Otago senior event. The tournament was conducted along similar lines to the world amateur teams’ championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. Only the best three scores for each round contributed towards the aggregate. The final totals were Canterbury, 927: Otago, 928: MidSouth Canterbury, 963; and Southland, 1006. The scores of the other Canterbury players were:— Amos, 79 76. 77. 87, 319; Orr, 80, 77, 82, 84, 323: Bradley, 81, 78, 81, 78, 318. The Canterbury reserve, B. C. Taylor, had rounds of 80, 84, 83 and 80 for a return of 327,
