Reservists Wanted For Malaysia
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, February 22. The Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve may provide up to half the officers required for the two coastal minesweepers which New Zealand will man as part of its increased aid to Malaysia.
The commanding officers of reserve divisions in Auckland, Wellington. Christchurch and Dunedin have been told by members of the Naval Board that the Navy would like four junior sea-men-officers to serve in the Far East for about nine months.
It has been part of naval practice to include volunteer reserve officers in ships making extended overseas cruises, but this is the first time the navy has asked for volunteers for service in a situation of semi-war. “The reserve commanding officers welcome this opportunity for young officers to undertake work of national importance and to gain valuable experience,” the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) said today.
“They have gone back to their divisions quite confidently, and they expect to begin interviewing applicants this week.”
It is expected about 70 New Zealand seamen will take over the coastal minesweepers at Singapore in April.
