PRODUCTION OF HONEY
Crop Below Average
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 22. The national honey crop.. is one of the poorest for years, according to the New Zealand Honey Marketing Authority in Auckland. The authority has handled 1400 tons less than the average over the last six years. The drop would not seriously affect honey exports as there are substantial stocks in Britain, according to the authority’s general manager (Mr C. T. Gosse). The reasons for the drop in production differed. Canterbury and Otago have been hardest hit, due to dry conditions in the last few months. Auckland soil temperatures were yery low up to midDecember, causing plants to secrete less nectar. The Northland crop was “practically a failure” said Mr Gosse. Westland, which got most of its honey from the western slopes of the Southern Alps, would get an above-average crop.” The overall production would be “just under average,” he said.
