CHICAGO, Feb. 22. The fla t of the world heavy-weight boxing champion, Cassius Clay—who is a Black Muslim was damaged last night by a fire which broke out in the Chicago apartment building where he lives.
Clay told reporters the blaze caused an estimated 4000 dollars damage to his flat on the third floor.
Firemen said it apparently started in a flat directly below Clay’s on the second floor. The fire began while Clay was dining at a night club. Asked by reporters if he thought the blaze had been started by his enemies. Clay replied: “No, no, no.” Fire Marshal William Foley said there was no possibility of arson, adding: “As far as I'm concerned, it was a routine fire.”
Earlier, Mr Merlin Nygren, assistant deputy police superintendent, had said the blaze was the work of an arsonist.
