N.Z. Man’s Catamaran In Magellan Straits
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) SANTIAGO (Chile), February 22. The 40 foot yacht Rehu Moan a, reported missing with a British family aboard, has been sighted in the Magellan Straits and is out of trouble, the Chilean Navy says. Dr. David Lewis, who grew up in New Zealand, and his wife and two young daughters are aboard. The family is on a threeyear round-the-world voyage during which they plan to visit New Zealand. Dr. Lewis sailed from Punta Arenas several days ago with permission to sail through the Magellan Straits for Valparaiso on the west Chilean coast.
Authorities at Punta Arenas, on the southern tip of Chile, said they were not unduly worried as the yacht’s small radio transmitter could have failed.
They thought she probably anchored for a spell in a fiord.
Dr. Lewis gave up his east London medical practice and sold his home to make the
voyage with his South African wife, Fiona, and their daughters, Susan and Vickie, both under four.
Last year, Dr. Lewis sailed the Rehu Moana to seventh place in the Trans-Atlantic single-handed race.
