No Action By Customs

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. The Customs Department today was contemplating no action in regard to passengers on the liner Oriental Queen who have complained at the closure of the duty free shop in the ship during its South Island cruise.

The deputy Controller of Customs (Mr S. J. Hills) said today the department had told the agents before the cruise began it had no objection to the opening of the shop to provide for the passengers’ immediate needs but that no permanent goods could be sold.

“Because the passengers aboard are predominantly New Zealanders, we said dutyfree liquor privileges could not be extended.”

Mr Hills said the department received the petition of complaint from the 223 Australian and New Zealand passengers this morning.
