CHURCHILL FUND

“Inadequate’’ Publicity

Publicity at national level for the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fund was “pitifully inadequate,” said Mr L. H. Govan, the Rotary representative at a meeting of the Christchurch committee. last evening. “We are absolutely disgusted that the national committee is not saying anything,” said Mr Govan. There should be a “plug” every night on television and radio, he added.

Other members supported Mr Govan’s remarks.

Mr M. Busby (Lions’ Club) said an effort on a national basis would be to have ail mail, parcels and letters cancelled with words in support of the fund.

He had spoken to the Chief Postmaster, Mr J. W. Lincoln, who was most enthusiastic about the idea. The meeting agreed that an approach be made to Mr Lincoln to ask his superiors in Wellington to cancel mail with an appropriate slogan. A motion by Mr Govan that the Christchurch committee was very disappointed with the lack of publicity coming out on a national basis, and asking that the national committee call an urgent meeting to remedy the situation was passed.

The chairman, the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), agreed to write to Wellington on the matter.

The committee decided to make an approach to principals and chairmen of boards of secondary schools asking for support from pupils. The committee is also to ask friendly societies for contributions.
