Vietnam

Sir, —“F.W.P.F’s” reply bn the recent bombings seems to take little account of what Mr Ross actually said. Where Mr Ross spoke of bombing and the possibility of nuclear bombing, “F.W.P.F.” talks of “steadfastness,” “determination,” “courage,” “duty," and “marked restraint.” I fail to see that bombing a country with few aerial defences is synonymous with such words as “courage,” duty,” “steadfastness.” The main reason for protesting is that bombing of North Vietnam represents indiscriminate destruction of a pointless sort. Children injured in previous bombings have been paraded through North Vietnam and China to arouse indignation against the Americans. Each future bombing is likely to provide more such child exhibits and more volunteers to help the Communist cause in South Vietnam. It? effect on the outcome of the war is thus likely to be negative. Its effect as an example of international conduct could be even worse.—Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. February 15, 1965.
