Obituary

CAPTAIN A. F. WATCHLIN

Captain A. F. Watchlin, 0.8. E., R.N.R., has died in Picton, aged 76. He started his career with the Union Steam Ship Company, and later formed his own company, the Watchlin line of coastal and intercolonial traders, purchasing the Margaret W. and the Port Whangarei. He also owned the Port Waikato, which was later taken over by the Union Company and eventually run by the Holm Company. The Port Tauranga, another of his ships, later became the Kapua and is believed to be running as a bulk-sugar carrier in Australia. He served with the Royal Navy during both World Wars. During World War II he was a salvage expert for the Royal Navy. Captain Watchlin purchased the yacht Fitheach Ban in 1946, and sailed from Malta to New Zealand in it in 1952.

He cruised many thousands of miles on the New Zealand coast, finally settling in Picton.
