Apricots For Italy A 6001 b consignment of apricots from Otago for the Italian market will be sett by air from Christchurch today. This is the second order from a Milan importer sent by air. The trial exports are being made by the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, Ltd. The apricots are flown from Dunedin to Christchurch by N.A.C., to Sydney by T.E.A.L., and to Milan by Alitalia. Pleasant Day With a temperature at Harewood of 67 degrees at midday, rising to 70 degrees at 3 p.m. and reaching 72 degrees by 4 p.m., the weather was pleasant in Christchurch yesterday. The temperature at 9 a.m. was 58 degrees. The Botanic Gardens recorded 70 degrees at 3 p.m., and it was 69 degrees on the Government Life building at 4 p.m. Skies were variable, and a light easterly wind blew all day. Cruise Ship Due at Lyttelton at 5 p.m. tomorrow from Timaru with Australian and New Zealand tourists, the Japanese cruise liner, Oriental Queen, is expected to berth at No. 4 West wharf, which is almost directly opposite the new port building. According to Holm and Company, Ltd., the local agents, the Oriental Queen will sail for Nelson on Thursday at 4 p.m. She will be open to the public between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday. Danish Visitors In a long club-to-club flight, 80 Danish Rotarians, 30 of them accompanied by their wives, will arrive in Wellington on March 29 for a short stay in the capital. The chairman of the Wellington club’s international service committee, Mr G. Hudig, told fellow members this at a luncheon meeting of the Wellington club today. While visiting here the Danes, all members of the Copenhagen Rotary Club, will be guests of different Wellington Rotarians.— (P.A.) Car Ramp A car loading ramp being constructed in the Lyttelton railway siding will soon be in use. According to the port railway superintendent (Mr H. E. Stevens) the ramp will facilitate car dispatch to other parts of the South Island, instead of the cars having to be sent with drivers to the Christchurch station. A privately owned vehicular car transport has been in operation for some time. It operates a direct shipside service. Special Log Ship A new Japanese log ship, the Matsumoto Maru, now at Mount Maunganui on her maiden voyage to New Zealand, is expected to take back to Japan a record cargo of 3.3 million feet of pine logs. The Matsumoto Maru has a gross tonnage of 8004 tons and a draught of 25ft. It has been designed specially for Tauranga harbour conditions and was built in less than six months at Osaka.
