MOVES FOR EXPORT HOUSE BEGUN
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, February 4. First steps towards establishing a comprehensive New Zealand export house were taken in Wellington today with the formation of an export market research organising committee.
Comprising a group of senior businessmen, the committee will oversee a survey of the country’s export potential with Mr W. R. Day, former man-aging-director of Levin and company, chairman.
Its members include Sir Woolf Fisher, Mr C. U. Plimmer. Sir Leonard Wright, Dr. G. A. Lau, Mr Malcolm J. Mason, and the former Labour Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr P. N. Holloway. The executive officer and initiator of the project is Mr lan G. Douglas, until recently a member of the executive staff of the National Party’s Dominion headquarters. Mr Douglas said today the survey would probably take a year, and would involve con-
sulfations with every known fitan already engaged, or with the potential to become engaged, in the export trade. “The information we gather will determine any move we make towards establishing a company to co-ordinate much of the country’s export business, especially outside the primary staples, and to field
a sales force to tackle overseas markets,” he said. “We have little doubt that the survey will confirm the scope for such a company, and we would expect it to have a substantial six-figure capitalisation. It should fill a widely-recognised gap in New Zealand’s commercial institutions,” he said.
