RUSSIAN VESSEL INVESTIGATED
(New Zealand Press Association)
ROTORUA, February 3. An R.N.Z.A.F. Sunderland made many passes over a Russian ship close to the shore at Tekaha, 44 miles north-east of Opotiki, in the Bay of Plenty this morning. On Sunday the ship appeared to be about a mile and a half off shore from Tekaha.
The ship, which has been sighted many times in the last week inside the threemile limit, was about one and a half miles off shore.
\A reporter . watched the Sunderland, from Hobsonville base, circle the vessel. Of about 3000 tons, the Russian ship has been cruising along the Bay of Plenty coast for about a week. She has been sighted by residents at Whakatane, Opotiki, Matata, Ohiwa, Ohope, Waiotahi and further down the coast.
The ship has not yet been positively identified. A spokesman for the Air Department, Wellington, said today the flight over the ship had been a normal maritime flight.
The flight had not been requested by the External Affairs Department, he said. During such maritime flights it was normal for a plane to check vessels by flying over them, he said.
