‘Ludicrous’ Order
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, February 3. A firm was accused of manslaughter yesterday—for giving “ludricrous” instructions that killed one of its workmen, the “Daily Express” reported. The instructions ordered a demolition team to start work in the centre of a 200 ft single-span bridge, said Mr Philip Wein, prosecuting at Glamorgan, Wales, assizes. The bridge collapsed—“inevitably”—and they were all thrown into the river Wye at Boughrood, Radnorshire. Twenty-eight-year-old Glanville Evans, of Pentre, Rhondda, died. The company, Northern Strip Mining, of Sheffield, pleaded not guilty in writing and no-one stood in the dock, said the “Daily Express.” Mr Wein said the instruction was almost as ludicrous as telling a man in a tree to saw off the branch he was sitting on. The case continues.
