CHAMPION LAME
Gramel May Not Compete
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. It is unlikely that the champion South Australian mare, Gramel, will go to New Zealand for the InterDominion Trotting Championship at Dunedin next month, the Melbourne “Sun” reported yesterday. The newspaper said Gramel is lame from a severe hoof injury suffered in a race at the Melbourne Show Grounds 10 days ago. Meanwhile, the Victorian trotter, Corop McElwin, went a step closer to the New Zealand trip when he led all the way in Victoria’s major event for trotters, the V. L. Dullard Cup, in Melbourne on Saturday night. His trainer-driver, G. Gath, said after the victory: “We have until next Saturday to decide about the trip. But I think it will depend largely on whether the Victorian Trotting Control Board offers the owners a subsidy.”
