MANY GO TO BEACHES
Christchurch beaches were still popular yesterday, although a moderate to fresh easterly kept some bathers away. The surf was small and choppy, and none of the beach patrols was called on for rescues.
New Brighton and Sumner had the most bathers. Taylor’s Mistake, although it had the fewest bathers, had the best surf. Bathers were driven from North Beach and New Brighton by a shower of rain at 3.30 p.m., but the other beaches were not affected, although South Brighton caught the outskirts of the shower. Tlie sand hole just to the left of the Taylor’s Mistake patrolled area caused no trouble, although 20 persons have had to be helped out of it over the Christmas period. The hole is quite deep. Bathers would be in no danger if they stayed within the flags.
