EIGHT MINOR FIRES
The Christchurch Fire Brigade yesterday answered eight calls to minor fires, four of them within 50 minutes. A rubbish fire at the premises of Hickmotts, Ltd., 23 Papanui road, caused slight damage to an outside wallSt. Albans and Headquarters firemen answered the alarm at 10.17 a.m. Another rubbish fire also caused slight damage to the wall of a house occupied by Mr L. N. Hewart, 59 Crawford street. Sydenham firemen, called at 11.5 a.m., put out the blaze.
A grass fire at the premises of South Island Motor Wreckers in Haytons road caused no damage to property. The fire covered a large area, and it took Sydenham firemen 75 minutes to make certain it was out. The alarm was given at 11.13 a.m.
A grass fire on the side of New Brighton road, between Palmers road and Keys road was put out by New Brighton firemen, who were called at 11.43 a m.
At 11.54 a.m., St. Albans firemen were called to a grass fire in an empty section at 24 Canberra street. Another grass fire, in a council reserve off Turners road, Lyttelton, was put out by Lyttelton firemen after they had been called at 3.52 p.m. They were called out again 24 minutes later to a fire in the wiring of a car in London street, Lyttelton. Slight damage was done by the fire.
A fire in grass, scrub, and trees at Nunwick Park, Harewood, was put out by St. Albans and Headquarters firemen, called at 6.51 p.m.
