RESCUES FOILED
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 29. Heavy snows and freezing temperatures are hampering rescues of flood-stranded people along the CaliforniaOregon border. About 500 of the marooned victims have now been isolated for a week. Civil defence officials said communities along the Klamath and Salmon rivers, cut off since last Monday night, were running short of food. Helicopters laden with food supplies tried to reach them yesterday but were forced back by driving snow. More than 4ft of snow fell in the area on Sunday night. The Weather Bureau said snow would probably keep falling in the area for a further 24 hours. The snow came after a series of massiye five-State floods, which claimed at least 48 lives.
