BOWLS Two Fours Unbeaten In Christmas Tourney

When the second day’s play in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s Christmas fours tournament ended yesterday only two fours had won all six games the St. Albans four skipped by E, Colville and the Christchurch four led by E. Trenberth.

These two have qualified for postsection play, which will begin this afternoon.

Fifteen fours have had five wins, and to qualify will require one win in the two games to be played this morning. There are also 15 fours which need two wins. In section D there were quite a few upsets during the day, and no fours won four or more games. There were three which came through with four wins, and each of these could qualify, as they do not meet each other in either game today. When play began yesterday S. Snedden (Linwood) had to win all his games to qualify, but in his first game, against G. Roberts (Burwood), he went down 22-12. R. Rickerby (Riccarton), who lost his first game on Saturday to L. Chapman (Woolston), won his next four comfortably. In his fifth game he beat J. Gallaher (Hornby) 37-16. His de feat of H. Deavoll in the last game on Saturday prevented Deavoll from qualifying. Rickerby then won his fifth game by a good margin. In the last game of the day yesterday the only two skips with five, wins—Colville and W. Ditford (R.S-A.) met. It appeared at one stage that Ditford would remain unbeaten, but Colville forged ahead to a 21-14 win. Narrow Win C. Rowe (Opawa) comfortably won four of his first five games, but in the third round, against R. Cox (Woolston W.M.C.), he was pushed to the limit to win 21-19. In the final game yesterday he met E. Carnie (Canterbury), who up to that stage had recorded only two wins. Carnie caused a major upset, winning 20-13. R. Anicich (Avon), who lost all his six games, was heavily beaten, 29-6, by L. McKendry (Dallington). This game finished 45 minutes before time. Anicich failed because of the number of wasted bowls played by his number three and himself. Invariably when there was plenty of room to draw to save, running shots were used, and often were narrow and worthless. Results were:— Section A, R.S.A.
