GOOD SCORE ON TOUR
Bartlett Takes 5 Wickets
"The Press" Special Service LEVIN, Dec. 28. The former New Zealand fast bowler, G. A. Bartlett, showed a welcome return to form when he took five for 32 for Canterbury against Horowhenua in the first match of the Canterbury team’s northern tour. Bartlett bowled at considerable pace but the most pleasing feature of his bowling was his greater accuracy. Horowhenua batted first and after two early wickets had fallen, B. Hemi settled in and batted solidly for 63. The remaining batsmen were quickly dismissed by some good bowling from Bartlett, supported by E. R. Hignett and J. W. Burtt. B. A. Bolton and J. A. Mills gave Canterbury a good sound opening stand with 46 runs but after both were dismissed at that total G. T. Barrett and R. Thomas figured In an attractive partnership which yielded 49 runs. Barrett batted extremely soundly while Thomas scored well from pulls and cuts. The best of the local bowlers was the former East Christ-church-Shirley player, C. K. Smart. He bowled Bartlett with a beautiful ball and fully deserved his three wickets. Scores were:—
Horowhenua 160 (B. Hemi 63; Bartlett 5/32, E. R. Hignett 2/19, J. W. Burtt 2/41). Canterbury B 175/9 (Barrett 49. Thomas 35, Mills 26; J. Burnell 3/19, Smart 3/38).
