3 DROWNED IN N.I. RIVERS

(New Zealand Press Association) WAIPUKURAU, December 28. A 17-year-old Waipukurau girl was drowned in the Porangahau river on Saturday afternoon.

Police believe she struck her head on a submerged log when she dived into a deep pool.

She Was: Pearl Violet Martin, daughter Of Mr and Mrs Jack Martin. of McCarthy terrace, Waipukurau.

Constable H. Munro and a civilian search party found the girl’s body at 8 p.m.—six hours after she disappeared. The girl was swimming in a stretch of river 35 miles from Waipukurau. Two small boys have met their deaths in the same river, near Masterton, on successive days. They were:

Wyvern John Sheeran, aged 5, of Church street, Masterton. Albert Ringa Kaha Te Whare, aged 4, of Vilma street, Masterton.

Sheeran was seen swimming in a water hole near the Waipoua bridge about 2.5 p.m. yesterday with friends but when he had not returned to his home by 6.30 p.m. a search was organised. His body was found face downward on a shingle bank about 100 yards downstream. Te Whare went swimming at another pool a mile upstream about 5 p.m. on Saturday. He dived in and was heard to call out.

A nearby child called “Albert’s hurt.” He was taken to the Masterton Hospital where he died about 9.30 a.m. yesterday.
