Took Wrong Turning

LONDON, Dec. 28. A motorist who gave himself up to police on Christmas Eve because he was drunk said last night: “I would not do it again. I would carry on driving and hope for the best.” The motorist, John Steward, a 29-year-old building foreman, of Birmingham, drove his van to a police station. His action cost him a £4O fine, £7 costs, and disqualification from driving for two years after he pleaded guilty to drunken driving. Steward, who was freed on Christmas morning to

go home to his wife and three children, said: “Giving myself up was stupid. Knowing what I know now I wouldn’t do it again. “I would carry on driving and hope for the best. And I would advise anyone else in the same situation to do the same.

‘I thought the police would just take my keys away from me and take my van away for the night.... I only realised what I was in for when they locked me up. They said I had committed an offence and they had to do it.”
